On Saturday, October 12, 2024, at Symons Valley United Church in Calgary, the Foundation for the Voice of Immigrants in Canada for Empowerment (VOICE) hosted an event titled “Racism:,  Let’s Start the Conversation.
The event began with an inspiring panel discussion where participants shared personal stories and explored the challenges of systemic racism—particularly its impact on immigrant representation in leadership roles. The conversation also focused on strategies to promote equitable advancement in diverse workplaces.
One of the panelists, Mohammad Awada emphasized the importance of self-advocacy:
“Stand up, advocate for ourselves…”. Dr. Nicole Johnson highlighted the need for mentorship, volunteerism, and inclusive practices to drive policy change:
“We need to mentor one another, find hiring opportunities, and volunteer. Inclusivity is everything. It creates the chance to influence policies.
As part of the event, The VOICE Community Impact Award recognized individuals for their exceptional efforts in empowering immigrant and racialized communities. The award honored Dee Adekugbe and Shreekanta Aryal for their contributions through outreach, capacity building, mentorship, leadership, and community engagement.
Samedi 12 octobre 2024, à l’église Symons Valley United Church à Calgary, la Foundation for the Voice of Immigrants in Canada for Empowerment (VOICE) a organisé un événement intitulé « Racisme : Commençons la conversation ».
L’événement a débuté par une table ronde inspirante où les participants ont partagé des témoignages personnels et exploré les défis posés par le racisme systémique, en particulier son impact sur la représentation des immigrants dans les rôles de leadership. La discussion a également porté sur des stratégies pour favoriser une progression équitable dans les milieux de travail diversifiés.
L’un des intervenants, Mohammad Awada, a souligné l’importance de l’auto-représentation :
« Il faut se lever et plaider pour nous-mêmes… ».
La Dr. Nicole Johnson a mis en avant la nécessité du mentorat, du bénévolat et des pratiques inclusives pour impulser des changements politiques :
« Nous devons nous mentorer mutuellement, trouver des opportunités d’emploi et faire du bénévolat. L’inclusivité est primordiale. Elle offre la possibilité d’influencer les politiques. »
Dans le cadre de l’événement, le VOICE Community Impact Award a récompensé des individus pour leurs efforts exceptionnels dans l’autonomisation des communautés immigrantes et racialisées. Dee Adekugbe et Shreekanta Aryal ont été honorés pour leurs contributions en matière de sensibilisation, de renforcement des capacités, de mentorat, de leadership et d’engagement communautaire.
