“Stop the Killing in Congo” protest made its voice heard in Calgary…
 
The eastern city of Goma is taken and they are on their way to capture another eastern city, Bukavu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).
 
An offensive by M23 armed group and Rwandan forces in eastern DR Congo is causing deaths and displacement of populations in the east of Congo.
 
Congolese diaspora communities and people of goodwill across the world are calling for an end to the killings.
 
In Calgary, the “Stop the Killing in Congo” protest took place on Friday, January 31, at Calgary City Hall.
 
The event aimed to raise awareness and demand an end to the ongoing violence and war in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Participants gathered in solidarity to advocate for peace and justice, calling for international attention to the crisis.
 
As the area where the fighting is taking place are big population centres, who are no stranger to this kind of attack by the Rwandan backed M23, the impact is huge on the big population of the cities involved, with widespread killings, rape, displacement, and need of humanitarian assistance.
 
Goma is the capital and largest city of the North Kivu Province in the eastern region of the DR Congo, located on the northern shore of Lake Kivu. It shares borders with Rwanda to the east, with an estimated population of nearly 2 million people in 2022, with at least 500,000 displaced.
 
Bukavu, in sight of the M23/Rwandan takeover, is a city in eastern DR Congo, lying at the extreme south-western edge of Lake Kivu, west of Rwanda, is the capital of the South Kivu Province. As of 2012, it had an estimated population of 806,940.

La ville de Goma, située à l’est de la République Démocratique du Congo (RDC), a été prise, et les forces ennemies sont en route pour capturer une autre ville de l’est, Bukavu.

Une offensive menée par le groupe armé M23 et les forces rwandaises dans l’est de la RDC cause des pertes humaines et des déplacements massifs de populations.

Les communautés de la diaspora congolaise et les personnes de bonne volonté à travers le monde appellent à la fin des massacres.

À Calgary, la manifestation « Stop the Killing in Congo » a eu lieu le vendredi 31 janvier à l’Hôtel de Ville de Calgary.

L’événement visait à sensibiliser et à exiger la fin des violences et de la guerre en RDC. Les participants se sont rassemblés en solidarité pour plaider en faveur de la paix et de la justice, appelant à une attention internationale sur la crise.

Étant donné que les zones où les combats ont lieu sont de grands centres de population, déjà familiers avec ce genre d’attaques menées par le M23 soutenu par le Rwanda, l’impact est énorme pour les villes concernées : meurtres, viols, déplacements massifs et besoins d’aide humanitaire.

Elle partage une frontière avec le Rwanda à l’est et comptait une population estimée à près de 2 millions de personnes en 2022, dont au moins 500 000 déplacés.

Bukavu, qui risque de tomber sous le contrôle du M23 et des forces rwandaises, est une ville de l’est de la RDC, située à l’extrême sud-ouest du lac Kivu, à l’ouest du Rwanda. Elle est la capitale de la province du Sud-Kivu et comptait une population estimée à 806 940 habitants en 2012.
