This week, Frankline’s Travels takes him back to use the Funicular to enjoy his time in the Edmonton River Valley, a piece of natural beauty in the heart of Edmonton.

The beautiful Edmonton River Valley adds an easy way to climb up and down its steep slope. This is through an outdoor mechanical elevator on rail, called a Funicular. A Funicular adds a touristic value to the river valley and makes it more accessible to people of all ages and abilities. It runs from the top of 100 Street, near the Hotel Macdonald, to the river valley trail system near the Low Level Bridge.

The Funicular is a $24 million project funded by the River Valley Alliance, supported by the provincial, federal governments, and the City of Edmonton. On June 23, 2015, City Council approved the construction of this project which began in March 2016, and was completed in December 2017.

When next you seek a piece of natural beauty in Edmonton, do not hesitate to funicular yourself, family, and friends down the river valley and enjoy the great view, the dark flowing river waters, fun ride on the segway, fantastic boat ride, the lovely trees, bicycle ride on the trails, take a walk around the valley, and let your kids play on the slides. Enjoy!
