Good day Edmonton. Good Day Alberta. And a very good day Canada. We have come to the end of another busy week. As always, Diversity Magazine has stories to share, captured during the week.
This week, we decided to share stories online, in photos, and on video as part of ongoing branding and structural changes coming up to Diversity Magazine.
I know charity begins at home, but I will first share stories from abroad:
When the west says no to money without conditions, China says there is plenty of money with no strings attached. Every African leader but the king of the kingdom of eSwatini still allied to Taiwan, formerly known as Swaziland, attended the China-African Leader Summit in Beijing, China, as captured below by Qatar Adventure.
The Chinese government did not disappoint, They pledged $60 Billion for infrastructural development in Africa. A move some think the African countries will not be able to pay back, and China will eventually take over control of Africa’s resources for up-paid debt.
You certainly know of selfie, don’t you? You know of cappuccino right? Would you like to have your selfie on your cup of cappuccino? Yes you might want to. Suzanne Baum of Hello Magazine reported a café in London is now serving up “selfieccinos” – a coffee with your face imprinted in it. Suzanne is pictured below in her cup of coffee she pictured below.
Back in Alberta: Let me first head to Calgary…
Diversity Magazine Writer, Jay Sanni shared that on September 1-2, 2018, the Filipino Community in Calgary celebrated Fiesta Filipino, an event where Filipinos and their families gathered together to have fun and relax, as captured below by Calgary Filipino Fiesta. It provided “a special time with friends, a time for fellowship, food, and lots of activities.” It featured “exhibits, paintings, songs, sports, and dances that showcased the richness of (the Filipino) cultural heritage.”
In Edmonton, our writer, Story Claire Okeke, shared this story using Harry Pon’s photo at the McDougall Park on September 2, 2018. A drumming festival, a celebration of diverse cultures and heritage through music, using traditional drums from different countries across the world. The event brought people together to enjoy the rhythms of the world.
Still in Edmonton…
Do you like outdoors? If you do, from time to time, you do search for great places to take your kids to without climbing, right? Well, one of the most beautiful places to visit in Edmonton, the River Valley, made it easy to enjoy your time there without climbing as I pictured below. The beautiful Edmonton River Valley adds an easy way to climb up and down its steep slope. This is through an outdoor mechanical elevator on rail, called a Funicular. A Funicular adds a touristic value to the river valley and makes it more accessible to people of all ages and abilities. It runs from the top of 100 Street, near the Hotel Macdonald, to the river valley trail system near the Low Level Bridge.
Back in Calgary…
As you may know already, Alberta election comes up next year to elect members of the Alberta Legislature. Nominations are going on across the province for candidates to represent various political parties. One candidate who has caught our attention is Cindi Ross, running for the UCP nomination in Calgary-Fish Creek. Cindy said it was awful news that a mosque was approved for construction in Fort MacMurray in her Facebook post in 2015 as captured below by CBC.
The UCP candidate, Cindi Ross has since deleted the post and apologized but only now that she is running for office. If she wins, she will have influence and power in legislation and policy that affect Muslims in the highest office in the province. The UCP did not disapprove of her candidature and she stays as a candidate in tonight’s nomination election in Calgary.
Digging more on Cindi’s past experiences, her LinkedIn Account says, she is a Secondary Mathematics Teacher with Calgary Catholic School District from 2005 to Present. Cindi volunteers for Scouts Canada from 2006 – 2012, and is the president for the Parkland Community Association from 2008 to Present. The million votes question is what do Muslims get in terms of treatment when someone hostile to Muslims like Cindi teaches their kids, or run an association in a part of the city in which Muslims live?

The Calgary-Fish Creek Nomination Event is scheduled for Friday September 7, 2018, from 12:00pm – 8:00pm, at Lake Bonavista Community Association, 1401 Acadia Dr SE. Calgary.
