Frankline when I came in you were laughing, I’m sure it’s about some stuffs in the news this week, can you please share with our audience?

Yes, for sure. I will share some political comedy with you all. Jason Kenney in India, Donald Trump hugging a boy who looks like him, and many more.

Great. I can’t wait to hear and share with our audience.

It’s another Friday. Its Diversity TV Weekly, in partnership with Alta TV, September 21, 2018, once more, telling the untold stories. Thank you for watching. My name is Thabitha Tshibula and I’m here with Frankline Agbor, at Diversity Centre, in the heart of the beautiful City of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Behind the camera is Aggee, Reg and Rene Tshibula. Gisele Ndoungo is giving production support.

What do you like about Edmonton? What do you think can be done to improve the city, make it better? What would you like to see in Edmonton as it grows to over a million people in population?

We invited an Edmontonian, Fahad Mughal, who ran in the last mayoral election and brought some fantastic ideas that we want him to share them with you.

Education is the building block of every successful person, a fact that Africa Centre supports. On September 15, supported by Edmonton Community Foundation and the City of Edmonton, Africa Centre gave out $50,000 worth of scholarships to 20 students of different heritage in Edmonton. The next entry for Africa Centre Scholarship is January 2019. Frankline you were there to bring this story to our audience.

The Canadian Arts and Leisure Association (CALA) uses arts to promote multiculturalism on September 8, 2018. Diversity Reporter, Claire Okeke was there to capture it for us as pictured.

The 2018 Calgary International Film Festival is here. Frankline bring it home.

One of the most anticipated annual Calgary festival, the Calgary International Film Festival will run from September 19th to September 30th 2018 and the film screenings will occur at different locations within the Eau Claire Market Theatre. This year, like previous years before, the festival will feature a number of films from different parts of the world. It will feature about three films shot in the African continent – DJon Africa, “a playful film that highlights the picturesque landscape of Cape Verde and raises relevant questions about identity for those whose lives are caught between two nations”.

Most of the time we complaint about the things we do not like about Edmonton; such as the weather, construction, and so on. This next story will get you jumping especially for our undocumented brothers and sisters whom the City will be looking at ways to help them access City services. Frankline tell us more.

Through consultation with community agencies and internal stakeholders, City of Edmonton Administration found that the majority of municipal services are accessible to undocumented individuals. An internal review determined five municipal services/programs that may require forms of identification or verification of income. These include the Ride Transit Program, the Leisure Access Program, Community Peace Officer interactions, Vehicle for Hire licensing and Adult-oriented business licences. While providing specific proof of immigration status is not a requirement of these City services/programs, undocumented individuals may still not access them due to fear of experiencing sanctions resulting from the discovery of their immigration status.

On September 18, 2018, the proposed City Policy C606 Access to Municipal Services Without Fear would govern the City’s approach to improving accessibility for undocumented individuals and ensure that City programs and services are accessible to all Edmontonians, regardless of immigration documentation and status.

Three Councillors in heavy immigrant populations in Edmonton voted against this policy, Ward 3 – Jon DziadykWard 7 – Tony Caterina, and Ward 11 – Mike Nickel.

We reached out to these Councillors to find out why they will say no to vital services to people who ran from places where their lives were not safe, from persecution, and threats to safety and yet someone in power will not want them to access basic services, to access municipal services without fear. Only Councillor Dziadyk has responded to our question so far.

“Hi Frankline,

Thank you for your email. I voted against the City’s Access Without Fear
policy because I feel our resources are better used helping undocumented
Edmontonians attain legal status. Currently, those without documentation
are living underground and without resolving their legal status these
people live with significant risk. I cannot support a policy that drives
vulnerable people further underground. These people need help and we should
be tackling the underlying issue head-on”. Respectfully sent from the Office of Jon Dziadyk,
Ward 3 City Councillor, City of Edmonton.

 Sep 18,

I spoke up at council today because we cannot allow divisive rhetoric to take hold.

This city deserves a higher level of debate than regurgitated fear.

Our Access Without Fear policy will help our most vulnerable, including homeless citizens.

It’s the right thing to do.
