The animating “Golgpoi” cultural masquerade dance from the South Eastern part of Sierra Leone, and another fantastic cultural masquerade dance performance from “Arie” Hunting Society of Edmonton all the way from the Western Region, the Capital City Region of Sierra Leone, all made their way to the all important stage of the Sierra Leone 58th Independence Day celebration that took place on April 27, 2019.
An evening of speeches, cultural master class, and delicious food faded into an exciting party at the end of the event at the Serbian Hall in Edmonton. Edmonton Mayor, Don Iveson proclaimed April 27 as Sierra Leone Independence day. In return, the Sierra Leone Association of Alberta in Edmonton presented a plaque to show their appreciation for the City’s support to their community.
A full house that attracted community members from different communities in Edmonton, drew out this conclusion from Dr. Abu Conteh, President of the Sierra Leone Association of Alberta, “…Personally I think it was a success. To be able to celebrate our independence with everyone…”. Â
