“…I’ve seen a very very good staff here who believe in the organization, and a coherent Board…,” This is how Sharif Haji speaks of his colleagues in his new organization working as the new Executive Director for the Africa Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Diversity Magazine made a brief stop at Mr. Haji’s office to learn about his vision for the centre on September 19, 2019.

The new Africa Centre Executive Director says he has a 90 days plan to first build internally, before going out externally, which he has a “6Rs” focus; role, reporting, relation, reputation, resources, and results. Results he said will take time to come. He assured that the Africa Centre is well positioned to be a thriving organization with a rosy road, well positioned to fill a niche. In March 2019, the Africa Centre Board resolved to hire an Executive Director to fill in the position that until recently has been filled by the outgoing Chair, John Gaye, in an acting capacity. The Board retained the services of TPD Workforce & HR Solutions for the entire hiring process. After an extensive search, the Board interviewed a total of 9 shortlisted candidates, and finally, community builder, University of Alberta Global Health Graduate, and Government of Alberta Acting Director, Sharif Haji, got the job.

The Africa Centre, known legally as the Council for Advancement of African Canadians in Alberta with a vision is to establish an African Centre that will serve as the hub of the community and provide an atmosphere which is welcoming, that shows respect for diversity and that supports all members of all interests and abilities.
