When Black Lives Matter goes through the fence of the workplace, you won’t believe what will be found.
A CBC investigation revealed that on June 24, 2016, a white South African-born surgeon tied a noose (a hangman’s knot) and then taped it to the door of an operating room in Grande Prairie’s Queen Elizabeth II Hospital. He told another doctor the noose was for a Black Nigerian-born surgical assistant.
The incident was reported minutes after it occurred. Several more times over the next four years, at least three doctors reported it to the hospital’s administration, Alberta Health Services, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) and Health Minister Tyler Shandro.
The hangman’s noose is to African-Americans as the swastika is to the Jews. Its origins are connected to the history of lynching in America, particularly in the South after the Civil War, when violence or threat of violence replaced slavery on African-Americans. The noose is a key hate symbol targeting blacks.
The Nigerian-born doctor who is the victim in this case is scared to talk about this because he will lose his job.
The victim is further victimized and the perpetrator of a racist act protected for reasons you know too well in your own workplace.
This brings me to my question of the day, what forms of racist acts or gestures have you experienced at work?
