As Alberta’s cases of COVID-19 rises, masks wearing also rises on the agenda of politicians.
Masks will be mandatory in all Edmonton indoor, public spaces starting on Saturday, August 1, joining Calgary.
Are we adding another layer of burden to bus drivers and those who manage public spaces to police the wearing of masks in Edmonton and Calgary?
A situation I witnessed in the bus yesterday seems to give a snapshot of the pressure bus drivers will face with this new mandatory mask wearing bylaws.
It was Bus number 4365, Route 1, from West Edmonton Mall to Capilano in Edmonton through downtown.
The bus was full, not because there were no seats, but because every other seat is left empty to comply with social distancing.
Those who could not find seats have to stand. The door is always an attractive location and the gentleman in the white shirt, with a face-cap, stood by the door.
Most people in the bus had masks on but he had no mask on. The lady driving asked him to leave the door, especially because of the risk he poses for not having a mask on, exposing people as they leave the bus.
He ignored and the lady was helpless and had to drive until he got off.
I offered him my seat such that he could seat down and move away from the door but, once again, he ignored.
More of these situations are going to come up, leaving bus drivers with a new challenge to manage.
What do you think?
