Diversity Magazine Flash for August 13

Blue and green are the colours of the ribbon used by the community in Red Deer Primarily Care Network being worn by staff and doctors across the city and at tomorrow’s Virgil at Red Deer City Hall to remember Dr. Walters Reynolds, a great family man, and great physician, killed by Deng Mabiour, a Black mentally deranged man at a walk-in clinic in Red Deer.

Described by members of his North-South Sudanese Community of Red Deer as certainly having personal and mental issues due to his loneliness, anti-social behaviour, Deng is always by himself talking to himself, and picking from garbage bins, and has no family or friend in Red Deer.

Every Thursday, Deng goes to this Red Deer Soup Kitchen (pictured) in downtown Red Deer to eat.

What transpired between Deng and the doctor before the sad killing, and a proper psychiatric examination of Deng’s state of mind is what the North-South Sudanese Community of Red Deer is keen to know as they strongly condemn the senseless killing of a man helping their community. They meet this evening to figure out the way forward with fear of backlash.

While our condolence goes to the family of Dr. Reynolds who was described as a fabulous doctor by his patients, the question of the day is, can more be done to shed more light on Deng’s motivation for the killing and his state of mind?
