It was short, exciting, full of energy, and passion, showcasing Alberta’s finest in a diversity of fields – politics, arts, and community building!

Racial injustice, lack of opportunities, lack of recognition of foreign trained credentials, racism and discrimination, Black Lives Matter struggles for racial equality, are some of the challenges highlighted at the 5th edition of Black History Month Ceremony at the Alberta Legislature.

However, there were inspiring speeches from Alberta’s “first” Black successes (pioneers), adding a flavour of Black political unity at the Black History Month Ceremony at the Alberta Legislature on February 4, 2021.

Hosted by Alberta’s Speaker, Nathan Cooper, co-organized by the Father of the Proclamation of Black History Month in Alberta, NDP Health Critic, MLA David Shepherd; and the first Black Alberta Minister of Justice, UCP MLA, Kaycee Madu.

This year’s edition was virtual and featured some amazing Black artists from across Alberta including: Vocalist Stephanie French, spoken word artists Omar Farah and Jumoke Verissimo, dance group Woezo Africa Music and Dance Theatre Inc. and community speakers award-winning poet, writer and performer Titilope Sonuga, and Jeanne Lehman, Executive Director of Black Canadian Women in Action.

Happy Back History Month from all speakers!
