Paquinou: A Celebration of Ivorian Culture at Easter
On Sunday, April 20, 2025, to mark the Easter holiday, the Ivoiros-Canadian Association of Calgary hosted Paquinou at the University of Alberta, Calgary campus. It was a vibrant occasion to celebrate the richness of Ivorian culture in a warm and festive atmosphere.
What is Paquinou?
Paquinou is a tradition that originates from central Côte d’Ivoire and is celebrated during the Easter season. As explained by Marie Suzanne Brou, Vice-President of the Ivoiros-Canadian Association of Calgary:
“Originally, people from central Côte d’Ivoire would travel to the forest regions in the West to work for about six months. Once they received their salaries, they would return to their home villages to reunite with their loved ones, hold community meetings, play traditional games, and celebrate their culture.”
Today, Paquinou has become a symbol of reunion, sharing, and showcasing Ivorian traditions.
A Feast of Ivorian Flavors
The event also featured a variety of traditional Ivorian dishes, including:
Foutou banane with cassava couscous and palm nut sauce
Djoumgblé (fermented cornmeal) served with placali
Gouagouassou with yam foutou
Attiéké with fish
Peanut sauce
Foutou banane with light (clear) sauce
Dêgué (a dessert made from millet and milk)
Honoring the Ivorian Woman
In addition to the delicious food, attendees were treated to a beautiful presentation of the Ivorian woman—highlighting her traditional attire, accessories, and the elegance she embodies. It was a touching tribute to the identity and cultural pride of Côte d’Ivoire.
