On September 13, the Africa Centre welcomed community members from across Edmonton and beyond to its headquarters for the fourth annual Free Legal Clinic, held in partnership with Oak Law Firm. The clinic created a welcoming space where participants could access legal services in English, French, and a variety of African languages, breaking down barriers that often prevent people from seeking advice. From 10 AM to 4 PM, more than 70 individuals received free, confidential consultations across a wide range of legal matters. The work was made possible through the dedication of 22 lawyers and students-at-law, who volunteered their time to offer both in-person and phone-based support. “It’s been a busy day, but a good one. We had lawyers available for every area of law, and we’re excited to expand to Calgary next year,”— Esther Nyaga, Community Engagement Manager, Africa Centre. For many attendees, the clinic was more than just a service—it was a turning point. Maimunah, one of the participants, shared her gratitude: “They really touched on the subject I needed and helped me figure out what to do. They gave me tips on how to navigate my situation and were patient in listening and guiding me.” With its partnership with Oak Law Firm, the Free Legal Clinic continues to stand as a testament to the Africa Centre’s commitment to empowerment, equity, and access to justice for all.
Le 13 septembre, l’Africa Centre a accueilli des membres de la communauté d’Edmonton et d’ailleurs dans ses locaux pour la quatrième édition de la Clinique juridique gratuite, organisée en partenariat avec le cabinet Oak Law.
La clinique a offert un espace accueillant où les participants pouvaient accéder à des services juridiques en anglais, en français et dans plusieurs langues africaines, brisant ainsi les barrières qui empêchent souvent les gens de demander conseil.
De 10 h à 16 h, plus de 70 personnes ont bénéficié de consultations gratuites et confidentielles portant sur un large éventail de questions juridiques. Ce travail a été rendu possible grâce au dévouement de 22 avocats et étudiants en droit, qui ont offert bénévolement leur temps pour fournir un soutien à la fois en personne et par téléphone.
« Ce fut une journée chargée, mais positive. Nous avions des avocats disponibles pour chaque domaine du droit, et nous sommes heureux d’annoncer que nous allons nous étendre à Calgary l’an prochain »,

Pour de nombreux participants, la clinique représentait bien plus qu’un service — c’était un tournant. Maimunah, l’une des participantes, a exprimé sa gratitude :
« Ils ont vraiment abordé le sujet qui me concernait et m’ont aidée à comprendre quoi faire. Ils m’ont donné des conseils pour gérer ma situation et ont fait preuve de patience en m’écoutant et en me guidant. »
Grâce à son partenariat avec Oak Law Firm, la Clinique juridique gratuite demeure un témoignage de l’engagement de l’Africa Centre envers l’autonomisation, l’équité et l’accès à la justice pour tous.
