NBCC Edmonton Launches “Rise for Jamaica” to Support Families Affected by Hurricane Melissa
The National Black Coalition of Canada – Edmonton (NBCC), a long-standing pillar in Alberta’s Black community for more than 40 years, has once again stepped forward in a time of great need. Led by Vice President Joy Thomas, NBCC continues its mission of empowering families through advocacy, education, and community support.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, many Edmonton families are experiencing profound emotional and financial strain as they rally behind loved ones in Jamaica who have been severely impacted by the storm. In response, NBCC has launched “Rise for Jamaica,” an initiative designed to bring meaningful relief both locally and overseas through community partnerships and collective action.
A key component of this effort is the purchase of a $4,000 C-can container, which will be filled with essential supplies and shipped directly to Jamaica. Once delivered, the container will be transformed into a functional classroom, offering children—whose schools were destroyed—a safe space to continue their education.
NBCC is calling on community members, organizations, and supporters to help make this life-changing project possible. Monetary donations, regardless of size, will make an immediate difference. Donors will receive an official CRA tax receipt within 2–3 minutes of contributing.
NBCC emphasizes that this initiative embodies the powerful call to “bear one another’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2), reflecting compassion, solidarity, and shared humanity during times of crisis.

La National Black Coalition of Canada – Edmonton (NBCC), un pilier de longue date de la communauté noire en Alberta depuis plus de 40 ans, se mobilise une fois de plus en cette période de grand besoin. Sous la direction de sa vice-présidente, Joy Thomas, la NBCC poursuit sa mission d’autonomiser les familles grâce au plaidoyer, à l’éducation et au soutien communautaire.
À la suite de l’ouragan Melissa, de nombreuses familles d’Edmonton subissent une profonde détresse émotionnelle et financière, alors qu’elles soutiennent leurs proches en Jamaïque, durement touchés par la tempête. En réponse, la NBCC a lancé « Rise for Jamaica », une initiative conçue pour apporter un soutien concret tant localement qu’à l’étranger grâce à des partenariats communautaires et à l’action collective.
Un élément central de cette initiative est l’achat d’un conteneur C-can de 4 000 $, qui sera rempli de fournitures essentielles puis expédié directement en Jamaïque. Une fois livré, le conteneur sera transformé en salle de classe fonctionnelle, offrant aux enfants—dont les écoles ont été détruites—un espace sécuritaire pour poursuivre leur apprentissage.
La NBCC fait appel aux membres de la communauté, aux organisations et aux partenaires pour contribuer à la réussite de ce projet transformateur. Les dons, peu importe le montant, auront un impact immédiat. Les donateurs recevront un reçu fiscal officiel de l’ARC dans les 2 à 3 minutes suivant leur contribution.
La NBCC souligne que cette initiative incarne l’appel puissant à « porter les fardeaux les uns des autres » (Galates 6:2), reflétant compassion, solidarité et humanité partagée en période de crise.
