About the Speakers

Janis Irwin:

Janis Irwin is a lifelong Albertan who is passionate about her community, she is a proven leader with extensive experience as a high school teacher, vice principal, and a university lecturer. Currently, Janis manages the senior high social studies curriculum for the province of Alberta. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Alberta, and earned her master’s degree focused on leadership and education from the University of Calgary. Janis is pursuing a PhD in secondary education at the University of Alberta. She has presented her work at various provincial, national, and international conferences. A dedicated volunteer, Janis believes strongly in serving her community, and promoting active and engaged citizenship with her proven integrity and passion.

Gary Moostoos:

Gary Moostoos is one of 11 children born to 2 survivors of the Indian Residential School system. He is a Cree from the Treaty 8, Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, Alberta. His cultural education began in the late ‘80s. For 12 years he worked as a Liaison/ Cree Interpreter for the High Prairie, Alberta Hospital which provides health services to a large aboriginal population consisting of 4 reserves and 3 Métis settlements. He then moved to Edmonton in 1999 to help coordinate the 1st International Indian Residential School conference in Edmonton. The people became his center for spiritual & personal development. He sat with Elders who shared traditional teachings with him, which helped him work with sexually abused children in care for the next 9 years. Today he is currently employed as an in-house Cultural Support Provider/Advisor for the Boyle Street Coop in downtown Edmonton, Alberta.

ERIEC Edmonton

A story of an Immigrant to Edmonton who went to ERIEC’s mentorship and find her way to a career.

Steve Young, MLA for Edmonton-Riverview

Steven Keith Young; born May 17, 1969 is a Canadian politician serving as the Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta first elected April 23, 2012 and subsequently appointed as the role of the Chief Government Whip.

As a Staff Sergeant, Young was one of the key architects in the development and implementation of the Information Management and Approval Centre (IMAC), a reporting quality control process that saw the move to a centralized approval process using reporting standard and business processes, data quality, and the move to full electronic reporting. This project was ultimately recognized in 2012 by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) as a finalist for the Weber Seavey award for policing excellence. Young finished his policing career in the Office of Strategic Management, developing the violence reduction strategy before being elected on April 23, 2012 to the Alberta Legislature.

As an instructor at MacEwan University in the Police & Investigations Program, Young taught Emergency Management, Criminal Law, and Policing in Canada. Young also taught at the Alberta Solicitor General Staff College where he helped develop the course “Policing and Persons with Mental Disabilities” and also taught Criminal Law courses to peace officers.

Steve Young is married to Leanne Young Q.C., an Edmonton-based lawyer, mediator, negotiator, and adjudicator. Together they have two daughters Abbey and Taylor.

Issa Kamara

Issa Kamara is the Founder and Executive Director ofthe Sinkunia Community Development Organization (SCDO). He was born and raised in “Wulumbu”; a small, remote and poverty-stricken community (hamlet) located about three miles north-west of Sinkunia.

He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Sierra Leone and pursued further studies in Canada, and obtained a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Manitoba. Prior to fleeing the crisis in his native country, Issa worked with the government of Sierra Leone as a civil servant in the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Country Planning. He was also involved with a United Nations Housing Project, “Capacity Building for Effective Housing Delivery” as National Counterpart-Housing Economist from 1997- 1999. In this capacity, Issa worked relentlessly for the improvement of slum and squatter settlements in the city of Freetown, Sierra Leone.

At Afro-Canadian Heroes 2014, he will be raising funds for Ebola patients in his native Sierra Leone.

Launch of DiversityMag, an upgrade from Afro-Canadian Magazine which started in 2012 now focuses on greater community inclusion and engagement. Green Crusader Inc. taking the success of Afro-Canadian Magazine’s two year start-up phase to the next level through scaling up to a broader diversity magazine. Diversity Magazine will share Alberta’s rich and diverse culture, stories of visible minorities and immigrants sharing their successes, discovering opportunities, and overcoming challenges.
