Unsung Heroes Award
- Chris Kofi Kwarteng, Grande Prairie

My name is Chris Kofi Kwarteng, though I go by my middle name, Kofi. I was born in Windsor, Ontario, to immigrant parents from Ghana, West Africa. From an early age, I understood the significance of embracing both my Canadian upbringing and my Ghanaian heritage. In high school, I developed a passion for educating others by leading presentations on healthy relationships, anti-racism, and bullying at various schools. I was also fortunate to join my uncleโs weekly radio show, The Sankofa News, which provided news and updates for the African diaspora.
My educational journey led me to earn a Developmental Services Worker Diploma, where I gained the skills to support individuals with special needs in schools, workplaces, and public settings. Later, I completed a Bachelorโs of Social Work degree, where I had the opportunity to help pilot a program with Big Brothers, Big Sisters. This initiative created a structured group setting for young people on the waitlist, engaging them in positive activities while awaiting mentorship.
In 2011, I moved to Alberta and spent 10 years working for Childrenโs Services, starting as a Caseworker and eventually becoming a Contract Specialist. In this role, I mentored community agencies and helped shape programs that addressed the needs of families facing various challenges. During this time, I also volunteered with initiatives aimed at reshaping societal norms, specifically focusing on menโs roles in combating negative views of women. My ongoing commitment to this cause was reflected in my participation in the ‘Walk a Mile in Her Shoes’ fundraiser for four consecutive years, raising funds for local women’s shelters.
For the past two years, Iโve been working as a Mental Health Therapist with Child and Youth Mental Health and Addictions, offering therapy to families in need. I also collaborate with the local John Howard Society, providing group-based anger management support for both men and women.
Recently, Iโve had the opportunity to explore my passion for community work through the Grande Prairie Intercultural Association. We focus on fostering diversity, understanding, and mutual respect among cultures, while providing mentorship and networking opportunities. This year, we organized Grande Prairieโs official Black History Month events and hosted our first food festival, Around the World in Bites, in August.
Giving back to the community has always been a priority for me, and Iโm proud to contribute in meaningful ways wherever I live.
