On September 9, at the Africa Centre headquarters in Edmonton, 47 students received $74,000, as part of the Africa Centre’s Edmonton Refugee and Emerging Community (EREC)Scholarship.

For seven years, the Africa has been awarding scholarships to promising students to help them pay for their studies. “…this scholarship means a lot to me because it will help me cover the cost of my tuition…,” Maimuna Njie, a single mother of four, and a Social Work student, one of the recipient of the EREC Scholarship told Diversity Magazine.

This one of a kind EREC Scholarship is funded by the Edmonton Community Foundation and the Canadian Western Bank. “…. I know that you are gonna do great things…you’re gonna benefit your community…your family…” Scholarship Chair, Youssra Badr told the recipients.

She added that the next scholarship application opens in May and applications will be on the Edmonton Community Foundation website for any student interested. “…this scholarship places financial ease on my parents…I can now go to school, finish my degree…tomorrow be the future of Canada…,” Political Science student, Enock Rutaganda, told Diversity Magazine as the event concludes.
