On February 25, the Africa Centre did their second open house to show the community its new fancy location in it’s Edmonton location.

Members of the community who came out were treated to a tour of the new centre and a legal panel who educated the community on legal issues.

The legal panel started last Fall with the free Africa Centre Legal Clinic to continue in each quarter of the year in an effort to educate the Black community in Edmonton on legal matters.

The legal panel of Edmonton based Black lawyers shared experiences on criminal, corporate, family and employment law, highlighting the over representation of Blacks in the criminal justice system, racism, discrimination, with one of the key take home messages, the righ to be silence after giving your name to a police officer, or call a lawyer for help if unsure of your rights – you don’t have to answer any question after giving your name, call a lawyer.

There was exciting entertainment from the super talented Marimba-playing group from the Sihle Sizwe Foundation. There was also presentation of unique gifts to Africa Centre for doing a good job in the community by the Cultural Enclave for African Seniors, and beautiful virtual arts graced the space by Black kids taught by a Black teacher based in Edmonton.
