As his bright catchy yellow tie glowed from the beautifully designed stage, so too was his message.
“…You can come to this city with very little and our community will lift you up and make sure you succeed…,”
This was a key message from the May 9 Annual State of the City Address by Mayor Amarjeet Sohi, at the Edmonton Convention Centre, organized by the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce and the World Trade Centre.
The speech touched on what the City is doing to tackle climate change, cost cutting, youth empowerment, employment, building a Hydrogen economy, diversity and inclusion.
It drew on the successes of people from every cultural backgrounds in Edmonton.

The soft spoken Mayor Sohi highlighted the success of Radhe and Krishna Gupta, who launched their Rohit Group of Companies from their home office in 1986, and recently, gave back to the community that helped them succeed by donating $1.5 million dollars to the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers.
He blew the trumpet of ATCO, who helped Edmonton to become the first City to power a major building with hydrogen during the recent Canadian Hydrogen Convention.
Yes, indeed, Edmonton is building a Hydrogen economy.
“…Soon, Edmonton will be the first city in North America…Yes, the first city… to build a transit facility that accommodates a fully zero-emission fleet including hydrogen-fuelled buses…,”
The Edmonton Mayor stressed on Edmonton’s leadership and collaboration with neighbouring municipalities, a number of whom were represented by their mayors.
The first visible minority Mayor of Edmonton mentioned that by 2050, half of Edmonton’s population will be immigrants, an increase of $84 million in new household spending and $20 million per year in tax revenue across all orders of government.
