BLACK CANADIAN WOMEN IN ACTION : Entertainment and awareness workshops
The Black Canadian Women in Action abbreviated (BCW) has organised series of events at the Orange Hub centre based in NW Edmonton this Saturday november 19th. The first work session entitled « Inner Child Series » was coordinated by the piano instructor Ruth Ruvimbl.Through out the session, she trained the kids on musical theories, notes and skills. At the end of this program, the children are expected to display the skills they have acquired so far in the presence of their parents and tutors. More over, the piano lessons are opened to children aged from 6 to 11 years old and runs for a period of of 9 months and is scheduled two or three times a month.
Later in the day, a workshop having as main theme « Beyond the mirror » entertained a group of girls for close to 2 hours. As the theme reveals to us, the workshop headed by Michelle Mckenzie, Registered Provisional Psychologist aims at understanding beauty beyond physical styles and characters. According to the speaker, there are many aspects that should make us feel bueatiful in our black coulor. She believes for black teenagers building self esteem in themselves is vital because most at times some are stigmatised due to their identity. This healthy conversation was an occasion for both the speaker and the youths present to share their personal experiences back in school and home. Amongst them we raise the point that blacks are less priviledged than others in the community in various domains. As a solution, the speaker encouraged all to build trust in themselves inorder to have a good mental health.
