It was a night of celebrating. Celebrating Black history, celebrating the rich, diverse history and contributions of Black people to the province of Alberta while looking to the future and it was a night of good food and great music.
Hosted by the Alberta NDP Caucus, the Official Celebration of Black History Month (BHM) saw David Shephard, MLA, Edmonton-City Centre along with other MLAs recognizing BHM for the fourth time since the province officially declared February BHM in 2017.

Speaking at the Vignettes Showcase Building on February 21, 2020, MLA Shephard encouraged those gathered, “Move into positions of leadership in our communities we have a lot to offer, a lot to bring to the table and it’s time we make sure we continue to be seen.”

He also recognized the contributions of organizations that have marked the month before it was officially declared; including the National Black Coalition of Canada- Edmonton Chapter, Jamaica Association of Northern Alberta (JANA) and Shiloh Centre for Multicultural Roots.
In addition, he shared a bit of Alberta’s history which saw Black American settlers relocate to Alberta in the early 1900s in hopes of a better life.
Referencing the current economic climate in Alberta, he noted, “The black
community is resilient, we recognise that there maybe challenges, but they know how to overcome.”
President of JANA, Coleen Neita also took a few minutes to address the crowd.
The night featured authentic Caribbean food and the soulful sounds of Bliss band.
