The entrance was brighten with beautiful African arts, and crafts, as close to a thousand people line up to buy their tickets or show their tickets as four bright smiling, welcoming ladies in magnificent African designs usher them into the nicely decorated hall, befitting for any great event. This is Africa Day 2018 back at the Edmonton Expo Centre.

Close to a thousand Edmontonians and Calgarians originating from every part of Africa, from every continent, race, political affiliation, religious denominations, walks of life, and level of government, came out on June 23, 2018, to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures of the peoples of African descent.

There were exciting cultural performances such as the lively NKWALI, who came all the way from Berlin, Germany, to thrill the audience to an exceptional performance.  The stage was graced with speeches from the President and Board Chair of the Africa Centre, different political parties, as well as, upcoming politicians. The display of culture in the beautiful traditional dresses speaks volume. So too is the relaxing friendly atmosphere for networking, re-connection with old friends and the fun that followed at the end of the event.

The event ended with awards to those who have worked hard to move the Africa Centre forward, followed by an exciting performance from NKWALI and some of Edmonton’s upcoming talents.

This is a take home message from the keynote, “I encourage you all, especially our young people, to create opportunities for yourself through participation, while I appeal to the parents and elders in the community to support and cheer on the efforts of our youth because they are our future,” Keynote Speaker, Moji Taiwo.

John Gaye, President and Board Chair of the Africa Centre, addresses close to 1,000 people who came out to support the  Africa Centre Africa Day celebration at Edmonton Expo Centre on June 23, 2018.
