Edmonton public school trustee Cheryl Johner resigned yesterday from the Edmonton Public School Board after stereotyping refugee students with violence.
When people run away from violence and come to a welcoming country like Canada, that accepts them and give them an opportunity for a new life as refugees, the last thing they need is discrimination based on their status.
If someone as high up as a School Board Trustee holds and shares such a discriminatory view of students based on their status, you can sure guess what happens with the principals and teachers whom we do not have the opportunity to hear and see what they do in the confines of their offices and classrooms.
In November 2019, a BLACK boy, Emmell (pictured), was accused of being involved in gang activity just for wearing a durag in Christ the King Catholic School in Edmonton, and his mother, Una (pictured), was banned from the school for protesting the decision.
The Catholic School Board, instead of fixing the problem by working with the community, they decided to trade in bullying. They threatened community leader, Bashir Mohammed (pictured), with legal action, so too was Radio Host, Ryan Jespersen for doing an interview on the issue.
Children are the future and we owe them a duty of a better world, no more, no less. The question of the day is, how do we engage the school system to help tackle systemic racism in our schools?
