“We need to tell our story… Coach Sam”
On February 17, the Africa Centre orchestrated Melanin Narratives VIII at the McKernan Community League. This recurring initiative has evolved in myriad forms over the past seven years, ranging from galas and showcases to art exhibits and community outreach, all aimed at empowering black youth in Edmonton. This year, the narrative unfolded as a journey that transcended the confines of time and imagination, delving into the realm of Afrofuturism.
“Culture shapes our essence, and how we express it defines us.”
Following insightful presentations by Sam Juru, the Executive Director of the Africa Centre, Hon. Randy Boissonault, and the Coach Sam, the day unfolded with a dynamic program designed to captivate and involve participants.
Commencing with a hands-on bracelet-making workshop, the agenda seamlessly transitioned into a thought-provoking panel discussion, featuring five young individuals and a mediator, exploring the theme of Afrofuturism and what it signifies to each of them. The day concluded on a rhythmic note with a collective drum workshop.
The event culminated in a vibrant cultural feast accompanied by captivating artistic performances, including singers. The unique blend of workshops, discussions, and artistic expressions underscored the importance of telling our stories, fostering a sense of cultural pride, and envisioning a future that harmonizes tradition and innovation.

Le 17 février, l’Africa Centre a orchestré Melanin Narratives VIII à la McKernan Community League. Cette initiative récurrente a évolué sous diverses formes au cours des sept dernières années, allant de galas et de vitrines à des expositions d’art et à des actions communautaires, toutes destinées à autonomiser la jeunesse noire à Edmonton. Cette année, le récit s’est déployé comme un voyage au-delà des limites du temps et de l’imagination, plongeant dans le domaine de l’afrofuturisme.

Suite à des présentations perspicaces de Sam Juru, le directeur exécutif de l’Africa Centre, de l’honorable Randy Boissonault et de Coach Sam, la journée s’est déroulée avec un programme dynamique conçu pour captiver et impliquer les participants.
Commencant par un atelier de fabrication de bracelets pratique, l’ordre du jour a transitionné de manière transparente vers une discussion en groupe stimulante, mettant en vedette cinq jeunes individus et un médiateur, explorant le thème de l’afrofuturisme et ce qu’il signifie pour chacun d’eux. La journée s’est conclue sur une note rythmique avec un atelier de tambours collectif.
L’événement s’est achevé par un vibrant festin culturel accompagné de performances artistiques captivantes, y compris des chanteurs. Ce mélange unique d’ateliers, de discussions et d’expressions artistiques a souligné l’importance de raconter nos histoires, de favoriser un sentiment de fierté culturelle et d’envisager un avenir qui harmonise tradition et innovation.
