Yesterday, Calgary councillors voted unanimously to pass an anti-racism motion to tackle systemic racism in the city.
“How can we effect change when some people do not believe that the system is rooted in racism?”
This is the question of the day from Edmonton Councillor, Aaron Paquette yesterday during City of Edmonton public hearing to fix systemic racism in Edmonton.
The virtual hearing brought dozens of Edmontonians to share their experiences, positive and negative, Councillors asking questions with at times pointed responses from participants, producing some fireworks.
The hearing continues today at 9:30 with real time updates from Diversity Magazine social media pages.
Calgary’s motion presented to councillors on Monday evening had six calls to action, including asking council to hold a public consultation on systemic racism and to establish an anti-racism action committee that would be tasked with implementing a community-based anti-racism strategy.
