Sonny Sekhon graduated from the University of Alberta with a BA concentrating on Political Science and History. He has spent most of his career working for an Alberta menswear institution, Henry Singer Fashion Group. There Sonny wore many hats throughout a 13-year career but spent the bulk of his time as the General Manager of Henry Singer’s Edmonton flagship location in Manulife Place.
Although Sonny is still employed as an appointment-based personal shopper/stylist, he stepped down from his full-time duties with Henry Singer to pursue an opportunity in the non-profit world. Sonny joined free Play for Kids in October as their Chief Revenue Officer and hoped to help grow the programming so that no child or family is left out of the benefits of a sporting community. This move was a surprise to many, but to his family and closest friends, this opportunity represented a merger of all the things Sonny is most passionate about. Sonny is married with one son.
Free Play was founded in 2007 as a non-profit called Free Footie. Through school volunteers, we provided a day a week of free soccer to more than 5,000 kids a year. That grew into basketball, hockey and flag football. Free Play gained charitable status in 2020. During COVID-19, need looked very different. We adapted. We hired staff and changed our focus to work with a smaller number of kids, everyday. This was to support families with free childcare while getting a chance to play.
