The date was April 19, 2019. The venue was the Sejong Multicultural Centre in Edmonton. The Zimbabwe community in Edmonton supported by other communities stood in solidarity with people of Zimbabwe back in Africa on a joyous evening filled with fun, live band, musicians, great speeches, silent auction, prizes, Zimbabwe cuisine, Zimbabwe history and culture, spiced up with music and an after party dance.
The United Kingdom granted Zimbabwe independence on 18, 1980. Prior to its recognized independence as Zimbabwe in 1980, the nation had been known by several names: Rhodesia, Southern Rhodesia, and Zimbabwe Rhodesia.
This year’s Zimbabwe Independent Day celebration took place in the backdrop of at least 31 people killed and dozens reported missing in parts of eastern Zimbabwe after a tropical cyclone ripped through the country. As a consequence of the cyclone disaster, the Edmonton Zimbabwe community converted their celebration into a fundraiser, creating GoFundMe Pages and other fund raising tools to raise the much needed cash to support back in Zimbabwe.
