The first ever Fairness for Newcomers conference was held by the Alberta Government on February 16th. Attendees participated in this invite only event both online and in-person. Diversity reporter, Keri-Lynn Gibbs was able to attend this event online in her role as a language and culture consultant.
This event was initiated by the Government of Alberta to help professionals overcome the barriers that hinder internationally trained professionals from being employed in their career in Alberta. The Alberta Government, Credentialing Bodies, and Settlement Agencies, in consultation with academic researchers, and a cross-section of newcomer voices, discussed making inroads in their professions across the province.
Banyk Chia, an internationally-trained lawyer, and Edmonton area business woman attended in person, and was featured as an example of resilience, and innovation. She met with Diversity TV to tell us about her experience, and you can view her interview online.
