Yoleen Naidoo, “said I have been telling them to come and arrest me. Now I just get voice recordings only”.
“Hello, this is a call from the office of Service Canada. We’re placing an order on your Social Security Number and you might be arrested if you ignore this call. Press 1 to speak to an agent now. You may be arrested if you ignore this message”.
This is a example of a message we get all the time from call centres based abroad trying to scam us off our hard earned money. These calls are on the rise and we are powerless to stop them coming in, but we can avoid being a victim of their scam.
The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) says fraud affects everyone regardless of age or ethnicity. Fraudsters develop elaborate stories and scenarios in an effort to make us believe they are legitimate.
Indeed, the first line above does not mean anything but for someone who is ignorant, it can be scary because it talks of arrest.
There’re different kinds of frauds; contractor, love related, lottery and so on. The EPS said in 2019, 6,492 frauds were reported with a loss of over $32 million.
The EPS says when faced with such a situation, take a moment to consider and research what’s being offered.
Call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre to report on 1-888-495-8501 or if you’re a victim, call EPS on 780-423-4567.
How have you been dealing with these scam calls?
