More than 100 languages are spoken in Edmonton, with non-English homes. Language is an essential component of human life and our cultural heritage depend on it. However, the world’s languages are constantly disappearing. Linguists estimate that about 50% of the world’s 6,000 languages will be extinct in the next century because they are not being spoken as the first languages by children. Loss of languages implies loss of cultural and intellectual wealth.
One Edmonton community, Igbo Cultural Association Edmonton, is determined not to let their language become a casualty in the language grave yard. On October 6, 2018, at Diversity Centre, the Igbo community in Edmonton started a language class to teach children born here to speak and write the Igbo language.
The the first session had a full house with great involvement according facilitators. The next session is in a week time.
