BCW International Women’s Day

Dr. Wanda Costen hammers home a message to women leaders as the keynote speaker of the International Women’s Day Celebration by Black Canadian Women in Action (BCW) on March 6 and 7.

The event celebrated women in leadership and their contributions to the community.

3. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry tells Oprah all that glitters is not gold.

The interview with Oprah Winfrey indicates that no one is immune from racism – not even an entanglement with the royal family. In the interview, Meghan and Prince Harry told Oprah the challenges they faced including racism and Megan also said that she even considered suicide.

4. Women’s Day list of 20 amazing women now released. Who made the list…..?

Diversitypluss put together a list of 20 amazing women in the Black community making a difference in Alberta. Most of the women selected have to wrestle with the pressures of being a mom, a wife, a daughter, a serial volunteer, and still squeeze time to do amazing things in the community, in business, in non-profit, in arts, in academics, activism on issues that matter to their community, volunteerism, healthcare, politics, community building, and you guess.

As we will peel out each woman on the flier each day and share their work, we will be putting another list of fantastic women in the broader community.

Please keep doing the good work even if you don’t make our list this time. We’re so proud of all you fantastic women out there making it happen at home, wrestling daily to give the kids a bright future, at work, in the community, in your business, on your project, in weathering your challenges, in your dreams and aspirations for a better tomorrow. A very happy Women’s Day 2021!

6. Coronavirus Project Cool Times:

Update from Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw: We have administered about 297.6K vaccine doses. 91K+ Albertans are now fully immunized. AHS is arranging immunization for residents in retirement centres, lodges, supportive living & other congregate living facilities with resident services such as common dining facilities, where at least one resident is 75+.

AHS has contacted eligible facilities directly. Work camps, condo complexes for people over a certain age, and retirement communities are not considered congregate living facilities for this stage. People in these settings may book vaccine appts through AHS or a participating pharmacy when eligible. Spots are still available for Albertans aged 75+.

If you haven’t booked your vaccination yet, please do so ASAP. Appointments are available at a participating pharmacy, through AHS by calling 811 or booking online.

Effective March 10, AHS will offer AZ vaccine to Albertans age 64 & First Nations, Metis and Inuit people age 49 with no severe chronic illnesses. AHS only received 58.5K doses & cannot book everyone at once. They will open bookings through AHS based on birth year – Albertans born in 1957 & First Nations, Metis and Inuit people born in 1972. Please do not contact pharmacies. They are not carrying the AZ vaccine at this time.

AHS will expand to other birth years in future days if supply is available. Everyone will eventually have a chance to be immunized, whether sooner with AstraZeneca or later with Pfizer or Moderna when available. If you are not eligible for AstraZeneca this week, please do not call 811 or try to book online.

Group 2A can begin booking March 15. Pharmacies can book appointments for ages 65-74, no matter year of birth. 156 have been added outside Edmonton, Calgary & Red Deer. AHS will be booking online by birth year only – starting with people born in 1947, or 1962 for First Nations, Metis and Inuit people living off-reserve.

First Nations, Metis and Inuit people aged 50+ on-reserve can book appointments through First Nation health centres on-reserve. Off-reserve can start booking via pharmacies on Day 1, or online, starting with people born in 1947.

7. What do you have for Diversity TV International News….?

British TV presenter Piers Morgan has emerged as the face of the racism that Meghan Markle suffers from the British media for one and only one crime, born Black.

Again and again, following Piers exit from Good Morning Britain, he went as far as suggesting that Meghan was a liar and defended the accusation as “freedom of speech” and “opinion.”

8. What’re we cooking this week for Dish of the Week…..?

Let’s go down to Krazy Jerk Restaurant in Calgary to join Chef Joshua in the cooking of this small crunchy ball-like delicacy.

Dumplings!

Dumplings are pieces of dough wrapped around a filling, or dough with no filling and deep fried. The dough can be based on bread, flour or potatoes, and may be filled with meat, fish, cheese, vegetables, fruits or sweets.

C. Alberta President of Treasury Board and Minister of Finance, Travis Toews, presented the provincial budget on February 25, 2021.

We know from the Edmonton and Calgary mayors that the budget is not friendly to cities and universities, but is it tackling one of the greatest challenges facing multicultural communities in Alberta, racism. In a period where Muslim Women are attacked on the streets in plain sight, and students form groups to fight “Black Supremacy”.

We will be inviting Leela Aheer, Alberta’s Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism, and Status of Women to tell us if there’s any financial allocation in this new budget geared towards tackling racism and all its forms. Learn more on this new budget on www.alberta.ca

D. Could your home appraisal be lower than it really was because of your ethnicity? Do you need another one?

CBC Marketplace found in a test that racial discrimination exist in the appraisal industry. They found that through a test with CBC employees of white, Black and South Asian background posed as homeowners of the same detached house in Oakville, Ont. Two appraisals were booked for each “homeowner,” and the visits were documented with hidden cameras.

Here are the results – the first Black appraisal was significantly lower, followed by the Indian, and then the White.

Always get a second opinion!

E. The Edmonton Interfaith Centre (EIC) and the Canadian Multicultural Education Foundation (CMEF) will be holding a panel discussion over Zoom on Sunday March 21 from 1 to 2:30 for the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD).
