Empowerment, love, amazing, dynamic, these are some of the words used by attendants to describe BCW in Action Women’s Day event that
took place on March 5 at the Fantasy
Land Hotel in Edmonton
Hundreds of women, supported by hundreds of men came out to celebrate women in cultural, and various fashion displays. Women from different expertise, skills, talents, and experiences were celebrated at the event.
MLA Janis Irwin called for support for the great work that BCW do to empower women in the community, “…BCW in Action has grown so much over the years but it’s up to governments to put some money to support it….they’ve done amazing but we all need to show our support…”
Yes BCW has grown into the largest and loudest Black voice for women in Alberta, with a growing support for men too, but lack sustainable funding from all levels of government.
Joy Gihana who is a wellness and empowerment coach described the event as one of a kind. She believes Women’s Day should not be limited to one day. “…..Women need support to be the best they can be…..there’s so much bias against women….women can be anything they want to be….the sky is not the limit…”
Randy Boissonnault, MP for Edmonton Centre, says BCW talks about what women want to do and the event demonstrates that. “….look at the dynamism in this room…it’s on that dynamism that we want to continue to support….”
The event rapped up early in the morning with partying and so much fun and energy that has not been seen in the Black community for years.
