Sierra Leoneans in Edmonton and Alberta joined others across the world to fly the green, white and blue flag for the 57th time since Sierra Leone became independent from the United Kingdom on 27 April 1961. This took place on April 28, 2018, at the Portuguese Cultural Center of Edmonton. Organized by the Sierra Leone Association of Alberta, with support from delegations from Red Deer, Calgary, and other community leaders in the communities of African descent here in Edmonton.
When he took to the stage in his characteristic calm style, President Kemoh Mansaray called on community members to favour a “building up of others” rather than a “tearing down” mentality. The event started with a beautiful rendition of the Sierra Leone and the Canadian National Anthems by children from Sinkunia Community Development Organization in Edmonton, and ended with an enjoyable party.
