On December 8, 2018, at the Serbian Hall in Edmonton, the Kenyan Community in Edmonton came out in numbers to celebrate “Jamhuri” Day. “Jamhuri” Day is a national holiday in Kenya, celebrated on 12 December each year. “Jamhuri” is the Swahili word for “republic” and the holiday is meant to officially mark the date when Kenya became an independent republic which happened on 12th December 1964.
The day was marked by speeches, performances, and ended with an engaging party.
A Republic Day is a holiday to commemorate the day when a country became a republic, a form of government in which power is not inherited, not a kingdom. In some countries, it is known as National Day or Proclamation Day, and in Kenya, it is known as “Jamhuri” Day.
