Nonprofit Driven 2024, held on May 14-15 at the Toronto Reference Library, was an inspiring gathering of nonprofit leaders, community organizers, and policymakers. As Ontario’s largest annual public policy conference for the nonprofit sector, it provided a vibrant platform for collaboration and strategic partnership formation.
In the opening plenary titled “Dreaming What’s Possible for Nonprofits,” leaders were called to recognize the immense value that nonprofits bring to their communities, despite facing unprecedented demand for services, financial instability, and staffing challenges. A dynamic keynote and a panel of diverse voices set an inspiring tone, encouraging attendees to envision and strive for a thriving sector.
Amidst multiple exciting activities, workshops, and sessions, participants had the privilege of attending the interactive session on Effective Advocacy, focusing on how to strategize to activate advocacy and drive policy changes in the upcoming 2026 provincial elections. Another workshop engaged participants in a discussion on advancing Economic Justice and Building Solidarity Economies through social finance, impact investment, and collective ownership. The panel highlighted the need for an economy that prioritizes people, place, and planet over profit, envisioning a more inclusive and equitable economic system.
The second day narrowed in on the benefits of Exercising Our Agency to Shape the Future, with participants also taking part in two other workshops that opened the door for deep dives and interactive engagements. The first workshop, Embracing Artificial Intelligence (AI), offered diverse perspectives on AI governance and ethics and provided practical resources for nonprofits, emphasizing the need to navigate this technological landscape thoughtfully. Before the closing plenary, which highlighted the crucial role of nonprofits in sustaining an engaged and vibrant democracy against the dangers posed by misinformation, divisiveness, and democratic apathy, leaders participated in a discussion on Intergenerational Leadership. Black female leaders discussed the importance of intergenerational connections in nonprofit leadership through mentorship and knowledge exchange.
In a Diversity Magazine exclusive interview with Erin Kang, the event’s organizer, she reflected on the challenges and triumphs of bringing such a diverse group together. Kang highlighted the logistical hurdles of ensuring accessibility and inclusivity but also celebrated the conference’s success in fostering meaningful connections. “Our strength lies in our diversity and the ability to unite around common goals,” she said, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration and innovation.
Nonprofit Driven 2024 was a testament to the power of collective dreaming and strategic action. It reminded leaders that while the nonprofit sector faces significant challenges, there is immense potential for transformative change. By harnessing dreams and exercising action, organizations can build a more inclusive, equitable, and thriving future for all.

Nonprofit Driven 2024, tenu les 14 et 15 mai à la Bibliothèque de référence de Toronto, a été un rassemblement inspirant de leaders d’organisations à but non lucratif, d’organisateurs communautaires et de décideurs politiques. En tant que plus grande conférence annuelle de politique publique de l’Ontario pour le secteur à but non lucratif, elle a offert une plateforme dynamique pour la collaboration et la formation de partenariats stratégiques.
Lors de la séance plénière d’ouverture intitulée « Rêver ce qui est possible pour les organismes à but non lucratif », les leaders ont été appelés à reconnaître la valeur immense que les organismes à but non lucratif apportent à leurs communautés, malgré une demande de services sans précédent, une instabilité financière et des défis de personnel. Une conférence dynamique et un panel de voix diversifiées ont donné le ton, encourageant les participants à envisager et à s’efforcer d’atteindre un secteur florissant.
Parmi les nombreuses activités, ateliers et sessions passionnantes, les participants ont eu le privilège d’assister à la session interactive sur le plaidoyer efficace, axée sur la façon de stratéger pour activer le plaidoyer et conduire des changements politiques lors des élections provinciales de 2026. Un autre atelier a engagé les participants dans une discussion sur l’avancement de la justice économique et la construction d’économies solidaires par le biais de la finance sociale, de l’investissement à impact et de la propriété collective. Le panel a souligné la nécessité d’une économie qui priorise les personnes, les lieux et la planète avant le profit, en envisageant un système économique plus inclusif et équitable.
La deuxième journée s’est concentrée sur les avantages d’Exercer Notre Agence pour Façonner l’Avenir, les participants prenant également part à deux autres ateliers ouvrant la porte à des plongées profondes et des engagements interactifs. Le premier atelier, Adopter l’Intelligence Artificielle (IA), a offert des perspectives diverses sur la gouvernance et l’éthique de l’IA et a fourni des ressources pratiques pour les organisations à but non lucratif, en soulignant la nécessité de naviguer prudemment dans ce paysage technologique. Avant la séance plénière de clôture, qui a mis en lumière le rôle crucial des organisations à but non lucratif dans le maintien d’une démocratie engagée et vibrante face aux dangers posés par la désinformation, la division et l’apathie démocratique, les leaders ont participé à une discussion sur le Leadership Intergénérationnel. Les femmes leaders noires ont discuté de l’importance des connexions intergénérationnelles dans le leadership à but non lucratif grâce au mentorat et à l’échange de connaissances.
Dans une interview exclusive pour Diversity Magazine avec Erin Kang, l’organisatrice de l’événement, elle a réfléchi aux défis et aux triomphes de la réunion d’un groupe si diversifié. Kang a souligné les défis logistiques pour garantir l’accessibilité et l’inclusivité, mais a également célébré le succès de la conférence dans la création de connexions significatives. « Notre force réside dans notre diversité et notre capacité à nous unir autour d’objectifs communs », a-t-elle déclaré, en soulignant l’importance de la collaboration et de l’innovation continues.
Nonprofit Driven 2024 a été un témoignage du pouvoir de rêver collectivement et de l’action stratégique. Il a rappelé aux leaders que bien que le secteur à but non lucratif fasse face à des défis significatifs, il y a un potentiel immense pour un changement transformateur.
