In the previous year 2020, we went through many ups and downs. When the year started, not many thought that the pandemic would last this long. But here we are at the end of 2020 and the beginning of the New Year 2021.
We’ve made it!
Most people might not want to do new year resolutions because of how turbulent this year has been, though it still is a nice thing to do and look forward to something after a year that has been as turbulent as 2020.
What is your New year’s resolution? How is it different from last year’s resolution?
In politics we’ve had many rallies and protests across the country, the most relevant being the black lives matter movement that had started in the U.S and carried onto many parts of Canada. Many were protesting police brutality and the treatment of marginalized communities within Canada.
There were also anti-mask Rallies in Downtown Calgary and in Steinbach Manitoba which seemed to echo the sentiments of many people across Canada who felt that the government imposed too much on their freedom with the COVID-19 restrictions
Premier Jason Kenney of Alberta was criticized for not enforcing stricter restrictions for COVID-19 in Alberta and in these last months of the year, he introduced some weak lockdown measures.
Mayor Don Iverson announced in 2020 that he will not be seeking re-election in the next Edmonton campaigns for the mayorship.
The Pfizer Vaccine has been approved and given to people in Canada with some provinces already giving out vaccines starting with frontline health care workers, though some were and are not pleased with how slow this whole process has been. A lot of people are hoping to see an improvement in 2021.
The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau has been praised for his handling of COVID-19, though some are wondering if this alone will be enough to secure him a re-election.
The way for small business, places of worship, and different places for social gatherings, moving forward is still unclear as the virus continues to take lives.
It seems that life as it is, is going to have to adapt to the new world order of living with COVID.
