Rhythm of Heritage: Guinean Djembe & African Folktales – A Celebration of Culture
From February 22 to February 23, the Guinean Association of Calgary hosted a vibrant Black History Month celebration titled “Rhythm of Heritage: Guinean Djembe & African Folktales.” The event brought together the community, family and kids for an immersive experience in African storytelling, arts, fashion, and music, highlighting the rich cultural traditions of Guinea and the broader African diaspora.
One of the key attractions was the African Folktales session, where seasoned storytellers captivated the audience with traditional narratives passed down through generations.
The celebration also showcased African arts and fashion, displaying the elegance and creativity of traditional and contemporary styles. Attendees had the opportunity to admire vibrant textiles, intricate beadwork, and handcrafted accessories that reflect Africa’s deep artistic heritage.
At the heart of the event was the Guinean Djembe workshop, an interactive session where participants, from adults to kids, learned the rhythmic beats of the djembe drum. This workshop was not only a musical experience but also a journey into the history and cultural significance of drumming in West African traditions. The rhythms echoed through the venue, fostering a sense of unity and joy among attendees.

Rythme du Patrimoine : Djembé Guinéen & Contes Africains – Une Célébration de la Culture
Du 22 au 23 février, l’Association Guinéenne de Calgary a organisé une vibrante célébration du Mois de l’Histoire des Noirs intitulée « Rythme du Patrimoine : Djembé Guinéen & Contes Africains ». L’événement a rassemblé la communauté, les familles et les enfants pour une expérience immersive mêlant contes africains, arts, mode et musique, mettant en lumière les riches traditions culturelles de la Guinée et de la diaspora africaine.
L’un des moments forts de la célébration fut la session de contes africains, où des conteurs expérimentés ont captivé le public avec des récits traditionnels transmis de génération en génération.
L’événement a également mis en avant les arts et la mode africains, offrant un aperçu de l’élégance et de la créativité des styles traditionnels et contemporains. Les participants ont pu admirer des textiles aux couleurs éclatantes, des perles finement travaillées et des accessoires artisanaux reflétant l’héritage artistique profond du continent.
