Santé et communauté : Un dialogue essentiel pour les Afro-Canadiens en Alberta
Le samedi 22 février, la Dahlousie Community Association a accueilli un événement clé organisé par CBEP et Réseau Santé Alberta : « La communauté Afro-Canadienne et le système de santé albertain ». Cette rencontre visait à sensibiliser les francophones noirs aux enjeux de la santé et à l’importance de l’accès aux services dans leur langue.
Un besoin crucial : Être servis en français
La santé est une affaire globale, influencée par plusieurs facteurs : langue, accès aux soins et culture. Une bonne communication est essentielle pour minimiser les risques et assurer des soins de qualité. Pourtant, beaucoup de francophones rencontrent des difficultés à obtenir des services dans leur langue. Il est donc primordial de revendiquer son droit à être servi en français en précisant cette préférence dès l’entrée dans un établissement de santé.
Un intervenant engagé : Dr Serge Kongolo
Le Dr Serge Kongolo, médecin de famille, a partagé sa vision de la santé comme un équilibre entre bien-être physique, mental et social. Selon lui, « La douleur est une expérience émotionnelle désagréable, mais le meilleur médicament, c’est l’éducation ».
Les participants ont également partagé leurs défis à leur arrivée au Canada :

➡️ L’adaptation au système de santé albertain
Un appel à la solidarité
L’un des messages forts de cette rencontre : la communauté a un rôle à jouer. En s’unissant, les Afro-Canadiens peuvent mieux naviguer dans le système de santé, s’entraider et revendiquer un accès équitable aux soins.

Health and Community: An Essential Dialogue for Afro-Canadians in Alberta
On Saturday, February 22, the Dahlousie Community Association hosted a key event organized by CBEP and Réseau Santé Alberta: “The Afro-Canadian Community and the Alberta Healthcare System.” This gathering aimed to raise awareness among Black Francophones about healthcare issues and the importance of accessing services in their language.
A Crucial Need: Being Served in French
Health is a global matter influenced by various factors: language, access to care, and culture. Effective communication is essential to minimize risks and ensure quality care. However, many Francophones struggle to receive services in their language. It is therefore vital to assert the right to be served in French by indicating this preference upon entering a healthcare facility.
A Committed Speaker: Dr. Serge Kongolo
Dr. Serge Kongolo, a family physician, shared his perspective on health as a balance between physical, mental, and social well-being. According to him, “Pain is an unpleasant emotional experience, but the best medicine is education.”
Participants also shared the challenges they faced upon arriving in Canada:

A Call for Solidarity
One of the key messages from this event was that the community has a role to play. By coming together, Afro-Canadians can better navigate the healthcare system, support one another, and advocate for equitable access to care.
