For the 5th year the Somali Canadian Women and Children Association (SCWCA) celebrated another fantastic cultural day celebration on September 21, 2019, at the Arial Banquet Hall in Edmonton. Recently, the SCWCA cultural event has become a platform to showcase Somali talents.
Last year was the 14 years old Yusra Ali who stole the show with her poetic talent. This year, a Somali mother of four, Mayran Kalah, animated the event with her stand up comedy. Mayran will be called back on stage as the Arts, Culture Service Recognition Award Winner, one of seven award winners for the Citizen of the Year award instituted this year to celebrate the contribution of an individual for their overall volunteerism and commitment to improving quality of life.
Edmonton Police Service (EPS) was on stage with Constable Jacqueline Buchanan, a Police Officer involved in the Police and Youth Engagement Program, who has worked tirelessly to bridge the gap between the Edmonton police and the immigrant community, especially with the youth.
Co-hosted by the great Edmonton Poet, Ahmed Knomadic Ali, the event this year was held two months earlier to take advantage of the good weather as explained by Sahra Hashi, the Executive Director for SCWCA. Sahra added that this year, the event was designed to be smaller and cozy, and only took her staff and volunteers three weeks to put on. The cultural day event entertained some speeches from dignitaries presented, spiced up with beautiful poetry, delicious Somali food, and Somali cultural dance performances.
Somali Canadian Women and Children Association is a non-profit organization established in 2010 with a mission to assist women and children in need, particularly the needs of Somali families and individuals living in Edmonton, through partnerships, services, and programs that are timely, culturally appropriate, and address their concerns.
