On February 29, 2020, at the Edmonton Intercultural Centre, Sinkunia Community Development Organization organized a one day event to celebrate Black History Month in Edmonton.

This was an intercultural and inter-generational event that brought together youth and their families, cultural and faith- based groups, community members and leaders to join in the cultural learning activities and entertainment to learn about the history of Black people and the diversity of Black communities in Canada.

The main purpose of the event was to help youth and community members understand the contributions and achievements of Black heroes in Canada, as well as, connect and enhance their knowledge and understanding of different cultures. The hope is that, the understanding of the contributions of great Black heroes and their achievements in Canada and the cultural diversity there of, will increase the self identity and cultural pride of the Black community in general.

The youth connected with their roots to better understand and appreciate the richness of various black cultures as they build connections across the cultural divide they frequently experience within their peer groups. Moreover, intercultural connections will demystify some of the stereotypes related to Blacks.

The event helped to promote multiculturalism in Edmonton, youth led, with the support from the program staff and volunteers, community members and youth from diverse cultures took part in the event.
