Is the Catholic School Board Trying to Bully Anyone Talking About the issue of Emmell and Una?

Ryan made this anxious comment before the show, “… we don’t want to turn this into a thing where this show is forced off the air…it drives me a little bit nuts when…there is an attempt to intimidate a broadcast like this…”
Edmonton Catholic School Board threatened Bashir Mohamed, Ryan Jespersen, the Ryan Jespersen Show with a defamation lawsuit on November 28 if they talk about Emmell and Una minutes before Ryan interviewed Bashir on the Ryan Jaspersen Show. Ryan, however, went ahead with the interview.

A couple of weeks ago, we had the opportunity to share with you this story of a single mother, Una, protesting her ban, demanding an apology, and wants her 11-years old son back in class in an Edmonton school called Christ the King Elementary and Junior High. Her son Emmell was not let into class for wearing a durag as the school considered a durag to signify gang affiliation.

Good news, the Edmonton Catholic School Board found Emmell another school with no dress code, and he has since resumed school. Mum and son are happy so far, but the story is far from over. Una wants her ban lifted and an apology, as the rallies continue at the Catholic School Building to keep the pressure. They met with Alberta Education Minister, Adriana LaGrange. The pressure on the Catholic School Board will continue on December 17 at the Trustee Meeting.

On Friday, November 8, Diversity Magazine got this statement from Minister LaGrange’s spokesperson, “Minister LaGrange has received the report and is reviewing it. She will be meeting with the family to discuss the situation further,” Colin Aitchison Press Secretary Office of the Minister of Education.

On November 19, the Multicultural Media Round Table, Diversity Magazine met Minister LaGrange in person and asked what came out of the meeting with Una, the mother of the 11-year-old boy and if they got the report. We also wanted to know if they will launch an independent investigation to get to the bottom of what happened, to ensure that another black family in Alberta does not suffer the same fate again.

“…I asked Edmonton Catholic for a report and so I’m just gathering all that information… Edmonton Catholic School Board has a policy and procedure in place and so I’m just ensuring that policy and procedure were followed. I contacted and spoke with the mum because I wanted to hear all sides of the issue and so I’m at the gathering of information stage while awaiting a final report…,” Alberta Education Minister, Adriana LaGrange.
