“A historic appointment. Congratulations Kaycee Madu for becoming the first ever Canadian Minister of Justice and Solicitor General from the Black community!…,” Sayid Ahmed, President of the Edmonton Manning UCP Association shared with excitement and pride. Photo from Minister Madu Facebook page during his swearing in.

Indeed, it’s a good thing for young people in our community to grow up believing that they can dream and their dreams can come true. The appointment has set off an outpouring of support and congratulatory massages from the community in Alberta.

There are also the objective minds, rightfully so, who dared to question if Minister Madu’s appointment is based on merit or tokenism as the only black UCP MLA.

Well, the challenge for Minister Madu and his supporters is not daring to question which everyone should be free to do so in Canada, but how these skeptics are managed and brought in to expand his base and strengthen his political power, rather than viciously attacking them as it’s often the case.

For a young man who wants to build a solid community base behind him and for a party that wants to broaden its base in the multicultural communities, there’s no better opportunity than after Dr. Leslyn Lewis has brought a breath of fresh air to the community on how to be a Conservative and still be loyal community advocate, a move that attracted thousands of new members to the party.

In the backdrop of heavy Black Lives Matter protest in Edmonton which attracted over 15K people to the rally with Minister Madu left fuming for not giving a speaking opportunity, why not use this opportunity to do some of the things that you planned to say at the rally – police reforms, disproportionately large number of minorities in the justice system, ethnocultural data collection in police carding, and what have you.

On the part of the multicultural communities, I think it’s the best time to keep political affiliations on the side and engage Minister Madu on the all important justice reforms bill such that you or your child can dare to dream without any second thought of your skin pigmentation.

I will leave you with these two brilliant questions from two bright minds; Diodonelle Bassasa and Adrian Bruff:

“How can we generate more Madus in our community in all areas of Alberta activities?”

“Yes it is great news. What does that mean for our community? How can we now position ourself to put forward a Justice Reform Bill?”
